In this first two years in the majors, 26-year old righty starting pitcher Lucas Harrell worked in 17 games (5 starts) in which he was 1-2 with a 4.71 ERA and a 1.95 WHIP. He came into spring training as a longshot to make the Astros’ pitching staff. Well, he not only made the pitching staff but he won a job in the starting rotation. Harrell has pitched in 10 games (all starts) for the Astros so far this year and he is 4-3 with a 3.72 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. The Astros hope that Harrell keeps up the good work and I have seen nothing so far this year to think he can’t.

Late in spring training the Astros decided to move 31-year old righty Brett Myers from the rotation to the bullpen to serve as the closer. He has been excellent in his new role so far this year. Myers has pitched in 14 games (0 starts) for the Astros so far this year and he is 0-1 with 9 saves, a 2.08 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP. 28-year old righty Wilton Lopez has been outstanding the last couple of years for the Astros, and he’s looking good again in 2012. Lopez has pitched in 21 games (0 starts) for the Astros so far this year and he is 3-0 with a 1.54 ERA and a 0.69 WHIP. 32-year old righty Brandon Lyon was injured most of last season and he pitched poorly because of it. But, he’s healthy and pitching well so far this year for the Astros. Lyon has pitched in 15 games (0 starts) for the Astros so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 1.88 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP. Myers and Lyon are going to be two of the biggest trading chips for the Astros in July, providing that they are out of the playoff chase.
